Reece James breaks silence after fan knocked out and put in wheelchair at West Ham vs Chelsea

Chelsea star Reece James has condemned an incident that saw a fan knocked unconscious before Saturday’s Premier League clash against West Ham United. A video did the rounds on social media showing a fan outside the London Stadium punched in the face before collapsing to the ground.

The man, who appeared to be a Blues fan seemed to confront a group of West Ham supporters before the incident occurred. Now, James has since taken to social media since to address the situation, urging fans to keep it civil.

“The news has crossed my attention that a fan was punched & knocked out before today’s game," the England international said.

“I totally understand rivalry and the tension between teams in big games but violence is no answer. I hope he’s okay. Appreciate the travelling fans as always. Stick with us & stay safe. See u in Dortmund.”

The Metropolitan Police have since confirmed a 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident. The force said in a statement:

"A 22-year-old man was arrested before kick-off at the London Stadium today after an alleged assault on another man. The 22-year-old has been taken into custody."

On the pitch, it was a disappointing day for Chelsea as they failed to secure all three points against their London rivals. January loan signing Joao Felix broke the deadlock early on in the first half before West Ham fullback Emerson Palmeri equalised as Graham Potter's side drew their third straight Premier League clash.
