Chelsea’s £145m failed transfers show Thomas Tuchel’s obvious summer target to help Jorginho

Throwback to the last summer when the video announcing Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea was announced. Jay-Z blasted through the speakers, and suddenly there was a collective sigh of relief that the club could have an answer to their woes.

Timo Werner’s addition to the squad in the summer of 2020 and since then has not brought the out and out goalscoring qualities that Chelsea have arguably not replaced since the departure of Diego Costa in 2018.

Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge was supposed to be the answer to all of this after having a standout season in the Serie A at Inter Milan under former Blues manager Antonio Conte. But, he’s had a slow start to his life in Blue again, and issues with the interview he did with Sky Italia has somewhat soured the romance of the comeback of a player with something to prove.

He’s not done that so far. With the amount of money spent on him and the type of player the club thought they would be buying from Italy - he’s fallen short of the mark so far.

Some say that he’s lacking confidence. Others say that he’s not trying enough. There’s one thing for sure though he looks sluggish and uninterested on the pitch at times, and with that, Chelsea’s striker woes once again are ignited.

There wasn’t another bitter example in the FA Cup fourth round against Plymouth Argyle. It was another game that Chelsea just about got over the line without their manager on the touchline due to Thomas Tuchel testing positive for Coronavirus.

It was two defenders who got on the scoresheet. Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso rescued a very late goal in extra time to help the club progress to the fifth round of the cup.

We’ve seen it time and time again now. Wing- backs, defenders and midfielders all come to the rescue to get goals on the board. It might just be a season where Jorginho is our top goalscorer in the Premier League.

Yes, we need a defender and a midfielder. But we might need to add a striker - one again, into the mix. Chelsea thought they’d plugged that gap, but it’s looking ever likely like that’s not the case. So, if there’s another area that Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea look to strengthen in a striker wouldn’t be a bad shout.
